Automotive significance
This distinction matters. Calling the 206 GT simply the ‘first mid-engined Ferrari road car’ erases the deliberate Dino identity under which it was sold. Technically, however, the car represented an important shift: a smaller-displacement engine, a transverse mid-engine package, Pininfarina styling and production thinking intended to reach beyond the traditional front-engined V12 customer. Period Motor Sport reporting recognised the 206 GT as Ferrari’s overdue move into the mid-engined GT concept, while later Ferrari material explicitly notes that the first mid-engined production road car initially did not carry a Ferrari badge.
