The Dino 246 GT Makes the Mid-Engine Formula More Usable

1969

Ferrari evolved the Dino 206 GT into the 246 GT with a larger 2.4-litre V6, a 60 mm longer wheelbase and greater torque. The Dino remained a distinct badge strategy while becoming a substantially more successful production model.

Automotive significance

The 246 GT illustrates how Ferrari was learning to turn a technically adventurous niche model into a repeatable product. The basic transverse mid-engine layout remained, but the larger V6 improved real-world flexibility and the longer wheelbase altered packaging and proportions. Period and retrospective sources agree that the 2.4-litre version arrived in 1969 and significantly outsold the earlier 206 GT. It also strengthens the historical distinction between Ferrari as manufacturer and Dino as the badge under which these V6 cars were marketed.
