The Dino 308 GT4 Introduces Maranello’s Production V8

1973 Paris Motor Show

Unveiled at the 1973 Paris Motor Show, the Dino 308 GT4 combined a transversely mounted 3.0-litre V8 with a mid-engine 2+2 layout and Bertone bodywork. It initially carried Dino rather than Ferrari badging.

Automotive significance

The 308 GT4 expanded Ferrari’s production strategy in several directions at once. It was the first production road car from Maranello powered by a V8, the first mid-engined 2+2 in the company’s road-car programme and a rare break from the long Pininfarina design relationship. Marcello Gandini’s Bertone styling made the car visually distinct, while the new V8 architecture would become far more important to Ferrari’s road-car business in the years that followed.
