Automotive significance

Ferrari’s 1956 single-seater was derived from the Lancia D50 programme transferred to Maranello after Lancia withdrew from Grand Prix racing. Fangio’s own car encountered trouble at Monza, and Collins gave up his car despite retaining a mathematical chance of the title. Fangio shared second place and finished the season three points ahead of Stirling Moss in the official standings.
