Ferrari Retains the Constructors’ Championship Through a Rule Change

1983 season

Ferrari won a second consecutive Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship in 1983, scoring 89 points to Renault’s 79. The season began with the adapted 126 C2B before the more extensively revised 126 C3 arrived during the year.

Automotive significance

New regulations ended the previous generation of ground-effect underbodies, forcing Ferrari to adapt its turbo car to flat-bottom rules. The 126 C3 also advanced the chassis programme by replacing aluminium honeycomb panels with lighter and stronger carbon-fibre panels. René Arnoux and Patrick Tambay combined to keep Ferrari ahead in the constructors’ standings even though neither won the Drivers’ Championship.
