The 308 GTB Establishes Ferrari’s Mid-Engine V8 Two-Seater

1975 Paris and London motor shows

The Pininfarina-designed 308 GTB debuted at the Paris and London motor shows in 1975. It used the Dino 308 GT4’s transverse 3.0-litre V8 but became the first mid-engined V8 two-seater to wear Ferrari badging from launch.

Automotive significance

The 308 GTB helped turn the V8 from an experimental expansion of the Dino range into a core Ferrari product architecture. Early cars used glass-fibre bodywork built by Scaglietti, another significant departure for a Ferrari production road car. The compact two-seat layout, mid-mounted V8 and Pininfarina styling established a template that would shape Ferrari’s smaller berlinettas for years.
