The 333 SP Wins on Its Sports-Prototype Racing Debut

17 April 1994 — Road Atlanta

The Ferrari 333 SP won its first race at Road Atlanta on 17 April 1994, with Jay Cochran driving the Euromotorsport entry to victory ahead of another 333 SP. The car had been created for customer teams in IMSA’s new World Sports Car category.

Automotive significance

The 333 SP marked Ferrari’s return to building a top-level sports prototype after two decades without a comparable programme, but it was not a works racing campaign in the traditional 1960s and early-1970s sense. Private teams bought and raced the cars with Ferrari technical support. Its carbon-fibre and aluminium-honeycomb chassis and high-revving V12 produced a long customer-racing career across North America and Europe.
