The 348 Resets Ferrari’s Mid-Engine V8 Architecture

September 1989 — Frankfurt Motor Show

Ferrari introduced the 348 tb and ts in 1989 as replacements for the 328. The new model used a longitudinal 3.4-litre V8 with a transverse gearbox and adopted a pressed-steel structure with a removable tubular rear subframe.

Automotive significance

The 348 represented a larger architectural break than its familiar Testarossa-inspired styling suggested. Ferrari moved the V8 from the transverse installation used in the 308 and 328 to a longitudinal position, while packaging the gearbox transversely behind it. The layout became an important step in the technical evolution of Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 road cars, even though the 348 itself would later be heavily revised before the arrival of the F355.
