The 355 F1 Brings Paddle-Shift Transmission to a Production Road Car

1997

Ferrari introduced the 355 F1 in 1997 with an electro-hydraulic system operating the existing six-speed gearbox through steering-column paddles. Ferrari identifies it as the first production road car to use this F1-style gearbox management concept.

Automotive significance

The 355 F1 completed a technology path that had begun in Ferrari Formula 1 cars with the F1-89. The road system retained a conventional manual gearbox internally but automated clutch operation and gear selection. That distinction matters: it was not a torque-converter automatic or a modern dual-clutch transmission. The technology established the direction Ferrari would follow for subsequent automated road-car gearboxes.
