The 360 Modena Introduces an All-Aluminium Ferrari Structure

1999

Ferrari introduced the 360 Modena in 1999 as the successor to the F355. Its aluminium spaceframe and aluminium body panels replaced the mixed steel structure of the previous V8 model, while the 3.6-litre V8 produced 400 CV.

Automotive significance

The structural change was more important than a simple model replacement. Ferrari used aluminium to increase rigidity while reducing structural mass even though the 360 was physically larger than the F355. The cleaner underbody, visible engine bay and new packaging signalled a broader shift toward integrated lightweight construction that would influence later Ferrari road cars.
