The 458 Italia Opens a New Mid-Engine V8 Generation

September 2009 — Frankfurt Motor Show

Ferrari presented the 458 Italia at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. Its 4.5-litre naturally aspirated V8, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and new electronic control architecture marked a major generational break from the F430.

Automotive significance

The 458 Italia integrated aerodynamics, vehicle electronics, engine response and transmission control more deeply than its predecessor, while retaining a naturally aspirated mid-engine V8 layout. The dual-clutch gearbox was not a Ferrari first—the California had introduced that technology in 2008—but in the 458 it became part of a new high-performance mid-engine architecture that would shape the next decade of Ferrari V8 development.
