Automotive significance
The 488 GTB established turbocharging at the heart of Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 road-car range rather than only in a GT model. It was an extensive evolution of the 458 architecture, not a completely unrelated clean-sheet platform, while its engine belonged to the modern turbo family introduced with the California T. Project Apex avoids presenting the 488 as Ferrari’s first turbocharged mid-engine car: the GTO and F40 had already used twin-turbo mid-engine V8 layouts decades earlier.
