The 599 HY-KERS Concept Brings Hybrid Development to Ferrari Road Cars

March 2010 — Geneva Motor Show

Ferrari unveiled a 599-based HY-KERS experimental car at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, combining a V12 with an electric motor and regenerative braking to explore hybridisation as a way to improve both performance and efficiency.

Automotive significance

The 599 HY-KERS was a development concept rather than a production model, but it marked a decisive step in Ferrari’s road-car electrification programme. Its electric motor was integrated with the dual-clutch transmission and recovered energy under braking, translating knowledge from Formula 1 KERS into a road-car test platform. Ferrari’s later LaFerrari would use a substantially evolved hybrid concept, so Project Apex treats the 599 HY-KERS as a precursor rather than as Ferrari’s first production hybrid.
