The California Expands Ferrari’s GT Formula with New Technologies

2008

Ferrari introduced the California in 2008 with a front-mid-mounted 4.3-litre V8, direct fuel injection, a retractable hardtop and Ferrari’s first seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Automotive significance

The California deliberately broadened Ferrari’s road-car brief, combining everyday GT usability with technologies that would quickly spread through the range. Its front-mounted V8 architecture was new for a production Ferrari road car, while the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission replaced the interruption in torque associated with the previous single-clutch F1 systems. Contemporary testing recognised that the car’s significance lay as much in this technology package as in its more accessible grand-touring character.
