The 1.5-Litre V12 Takes Shape

1946

As Enzo Ferrari assembles the engineering team for a car that will carry his own name, Gioachino Colombo’s compact 1.5-litre V12 concept develops into the power unit for the forthcoming 125 project.

Automotive significance

Colombo had begun sketching the engine during the summer of 1945. By 1946 the project had become a compact 60-degree V12 with an oversquare bore-and-stroke relationship and a single overhead camshaft for each cylinder bank, with Giuseppe Busso and other engineers contributing as development continued. The first Ferrari-badged automobile belongs to the next chapter: this moment records the engineering foundation immediately before the 125 S appeared in 1947.
