Ferrari Answers at Daytona with a 1–2–3 Finish

4–5 February 1967

Ferrari opened the 1967 international sports-car season with a 1–2–3 finish at the 24 Hours of Daytona. A 330 P3/P4 driven by Lorenzo Bandini and Chris Amon led home a 330 P4 and a NART-entered 412 P, with the three cars crossing the line in formation.

Automotive significance

The finish became one of Ferrari’s most recognisable racing images because of its context. Ford had ended Ferrari’s Le Mans streak the previous year; Daytona was Ford’s home territory and an important round of the manufacturers’ championship. Ferrari’s management instructed the leading cars to group together for the finish, turning the result into a deliberate visual statement. The later 365 GTB4 would acquire the unofficial ‘Daytona’ nickname in reference to this result, linking a racing photograph to one of Ferrari’s best-known road-car names.
