The F40 Marks Ferrari’s 40th Anniversary with a Twin-Turbo Flagship

21 July 1987 — Maranello

Ferrari unveiled the F40 at Maranello’s civic centre on 21 July 1987 to mark forty years since the first Ferrari-badged car. Its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V8 produced 478 CV and its steel tubular structure was extensively combined with composite materials.

Automotive significance

The F40 pushed the turbocharged and lightweight ideas explored by the GTO into a more uncompromising road car. Pininfarina’s aerodynamic body, bonded Kevlar reinforcement and carbon-fibre components were paired with minimal driver assistance and a claimed 324 km/h top speed. Contemporary Road & Track reporting recorded Enzo Ferrari attending the Maranello presentation; Ferrari later described the F40 as the last road car personally commissioned and approved by him before his death in 1988.
