Victory and Tragedy at the Final Mille Miglia

12 May 1957

Piero Taruffi wins the 1957 Mille Miglia in a Ferrari 315 S, but the event is overshadowed by the fatal crash of Alfonso de Portago and Edmund Nelson near Guidizzolo.

Automotive significance

Taruffi’s victory closed Ferrari’s competitive history in the original Mille Miglia speed race. De Portago’s Ferrari 335 S left the road late in the event, killing the crew and spectators. The disaster intensified scrutiny of open-road competition and the speed-format Mille Miglia did not return. For Ferrari, the day combined a major sporting result with one of the most serious tragedies of its early history.
