Fiorano Opens as Ferrari’s Private Development Circuit

8 April 1972

Ferrari opened its private Fiorano test circuit on 8 April 1972 beside the Maranello factory. The roughly three-kilometre facility was conceived for continuous development of both road cars and competition machinery rather than for public racing.

Automotive significance

Fiorano gave Ferrari something few rivals could match: a dedicated development environment immediately beside the factory. Its combination of corners, braking zones and a long straight allowed engineers to study handling, stability, acceleration, braking and aerodynamics without depending on public circuits. Contemporary reporting already recognised the strategic importance of the new private test track before it formally opened.
