Negotiations with Ford Collapse

22 May 1963

After weeks of negotiations over a possible Ford-Ferrari agreement, the talks ended in May 1963. A Ford news release dated 22 May said discussions toward a possible collaboration had been suspended by mutual agreement; Ferrari’s later account says Enzo Ferrari withdrew before signing in order to preserve autonomy over racing.

Automotive significance

This moment is important precisely because the surviving corporate narratives are not identical. Ford’s contemporary public wording was deliberately neutral, while Ferrari’s later history emphasises Enzo Ferrari’s refusal to surrender control of competition activities. What is not in dispute is that the deal failed and Ford immediately intensified its high-performance programme, ultimately creating the GT40 effort aimed at races including Le Mans. Project Apex therefore records the failed negotiation without repeating cinematic dialogue or treating later anecdotes as documentary fact.
