Ferrari Takes an Emotional One-Two at Monza

11 September 1988 — Monza

Less than a month after Enzo Ferrari’s death, Gerhard Berger won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza ahead of team-mate Michele Alboreto. It was Ferrari’s only Grand Prix victory of the 1988 season.

Automotive significance

The result carried unusual emotional weight because it came on Ferrari’s home soil during the first weeks after the founder’s death. McLaren had won every previous round of the season and would win every remaining race, making Ferrari’s Monza one-two the only interruption to McLaren’s 1988 winning run. The moment belongs in Ferrari history as both a sporting result and a cultural farewell, without needing to mythologise the circumstances of Ayrton Senna’s late retirement.
