Ferrari Opens the Renzo Piano Wind Tunnel

1998

Ferrari opened a new wind tunnel at Maranello in 1998, designed by Renzo Piano. The facility could work with half-scale models and also accommodate full-size cars at lower air speeds.

Automotive significance

The wind tunnel was part of Ferrari’s wider investment in technical infrastructure during the 1990s. It gave the Scuderia a dedicated aerodynamic development environment at a time when Formula 1 performance was increasingly dependent on controlled wind-tunnel work. Ferrari states that the 1998 F300 used the facility only partially, while the 1999 F399 was the first car to exploit it fully.
