Jean Todt Takes Charge of the Scuderia’s Rebuilding Programme

July 1993

Jean Todt joined Ferrari in July 1993 to lead the sporting operation after a successful career running Peugeot’s motorsport programmes. He became the first non-Italian to head Scuderia Ferrari.

Automotive significance

Todt arrived while Ferrari was enduring a third consecutive winless Formula 1 season. His importance lay less in an immediate change of results than in creating a more stable sporting organisation and recruiting the people around whom the later championship-winning structure would be built. Michael Schumacher, Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne would all become central to that programme during the second half of the decade.
