Ferrari appointed John Elkann as Chairman on 21 July 2018 after the company announced that Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne would be unable to return to work. Louis Camilleri was subsequently appointed Chief Executive Officer.

The leadership transition came at a strategically important point for the newly independent listed company. Marchionne had overseen the separation from FCA and the initial phase of Ferrari’s public-company strategy. Elkann and Camilleri inherited that framework and presented the next industrial plan later in 2018.
