Lauda and the 312 T Return Ferrari to the Formula 1 Summit

7 September 1975 — Monza

Niki Lauda finished third at Monza on 7 September 1975 to secure the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, while Ferrari also finished the season as Constructors’ Champion. Clay Regazzoni won the Italian Grand Prix in the sister 312 T.

Automotive significance

Mauro Forghieri’s 312 T was central to Ferrari’s recovery. Its flat-12 engine kept mass low, while the transverse gearbox—reflected by the ‘T’ for trasversale—reduced mass behind the rear axle and helped centralise the car’s weight. Lauda’s title ended an eleven-year wait for a Ferrari drivers’ championship and began a period in which evolutions of the 312 T would deliver repeated constructors’ success.
