A NART 250 LM Gives Ferrari a Sixth Consecutive Le Mans Victory

19–20 June 1965

Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt won the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans in a North American Racing Team Ferrari 250 LM. Two more Ferraris completed the podium, giving the marque its sixth consecutive overall victory at Le Mans from 1960 through 1965.

Automotive significance

The victory is easy to misrepresent as a straightforward factory win. It was not: the winning 250 LM was entered by Luigi Chinetti’s NART, while Ferrari’s newer works prototypes encountered problems. The older 250 LM’s reliability and the pace of Gregory and Rindt carried it through a race in which the faster Ford and factory Ferrari machinery faltered. The result became Ferrari’s ninth overall Le Mans victory and, unexpectedly, its final overall win there until 2023.
