Automotive significance

The older Alfa faced five Mercedes-Benz W25s and four Auto Unions, machinery developed under the new 750-kilogram Grand Prix formula. Nuvolari recovered from a costly pit stop and remained in contention until Manfred von Brauchitsch’s leading Mercedes suffered a tyre failure on the final lap. The result is significant without relying on later myths surrounding the ceremony or disputed claims about the Alfa’s exact engine specification.
