Villeneuve Gives Ferrari’s Turbo Programme Its First Grand Prix Win

31 May 1981 — Monaco

Gilles Villeneuve won the Monaco Grand Prix on 31 May 1981 in the Ferrari 126 CK. It was the first Formula 1 victory for a turbocharged Ferrari and the first time a turbocharged car had won at Monaco.

Automotive significance

Ferrari had moved from the naturally aspirated flat-12 to a 1.5-litre turbocharged V6 for its new Formula 1 era. Turbo power was difficult to manage on Monaco’s slow, tight circuit, which made Villeneuve’s result an important demonstration that the concept could win outside power-dominated tracks. The victory should not be confused with the first turbocharged win in Formula 1 overall, which Renault had achieved earlier.
